Whose responsibility?

Mortgage?

The intersection of Freddie and Fannie makes me think of the Queen song "Fat Bottomed Girls"

Three companies sponsored George W's plane on his first presidential campaign: Halliburton, Enron and Sallie Mae. Sallie Mae is evil. They destroyed my life.

Did some one at Sallie Mae hold a gun to you head and make you sign the mortgage? WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?

menage a trois or...

Sallie Mae does more than mortgages, they also give out student loans, which by all means can ruin one's life post-graduating.

I know this isn't a site for REAL Erler diagrams, but the actual look of that would be those three little circles inside of a larger circle of bastards. Do you need to be Freddie, Fannie, and Sallie in order to be a bastard?
Inside that big circle you can go ahead and put stickler comments if you like.

ha ha ha!
this is great!

Wow...so, someone forced you to take out a student loan? If you couldn't pay it back, did George Bush cause you not to pay it back?

You think you had trouble with that, you should have tried to not pay back a bank!

Anonymous said...

If they have 'bastard' in common, who is it? The Gov't policy that kicked the whole thing off? Or the voters who like those kinds of handouts.. err... assistance?

Mike said...

Some of you dweebs are missing the point. ALL of us are going to wind up paying the price to make a few peo.. bastards rich. Add this to the cost of attacking Iraq and our greatgrand kids will still be in debt.

So, people who sign for loans they can't pay for blame the bank.

Just like people who get fat sue McDonalds and people with lung cancer sue Tobacco companies.

Yeah, sure, all those companies could have done things better, but still, the consumer had the choice.

The invisible hand slaps down stupid people.

Maybe the issue is not that "someone held a gun to your head and made you take out the loan" as much as full disclosure regarding what happens down the line with adjustable rate mortgages and balloon payments. Maybe the fine print shouldn't be quite so fine.

M. Steve Heartsill said...

So...because you didn't read the fine print...it is their fault? How silly is that?

The old saying is true--if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is! If you are told that you can get a loan at 2-3% less than the going rate, but in 4-5 years you will have a balloon payment...you might want to check out what balloon really means!

Check out Dave Ramsey's Web site for more information about mortgages, balloons, budgets, etc.

@ Steve

To bad everyone's not as smart as you are Steve.

@ Anon. "WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY?"

What happened to being responsible to your fellow human beings? The "every man for himself" mentality that neocons have now is killing this country.

My favorite are the little whiners who pay taxes and then complain when tax dollars are used to bail out companies that took unacceptable risks in handing out mortgages... What suckers. If they had voted republican, the taxes would have been lower and there wouldn't be enough money to hand out to these corporations.

If the pinko commies hadn't been crying so much, we could have deregulated more and faster and totally avoided this mess, but market constraints have kept capitalism from working properly.

obviously.

I had taken a LEGAL hardship deferral on my student loans while taking care of my dying father. When the six months was up, I called to start payments. In the meantime, Sallie Mae had changed my status to default and handed over my loan to the government, who added $17,000 worth of 'fees'. No notification. No communication whatsoever, and no recourse. I have spent thousands in legal fees fighting this.

My lawyer tells me they did this to a lot of people. It was a blatant cash grab while they were privatizing, and brilliant in a sickening way. No one they defaulted had the funds to fight them in court (around $15,000 just to put my credit status back the way it was before the default - and no guarantees that I'd win). I've signed on to a class action suit. Otherwise my credit was perfect. Jeesh! People!

You know, I think everyone here is forgetting about the brilliance of the comic. I mean, it simultaneously targets 2+ groups at once. This one is pure genius. Along with all the rest of them, of course.

Thanks devil and Intransigentia...your name calling really adds to the weight of your argument! And to the signs of intelligent life at your keyboard.

All of us have been screwed over in life. I just happen to choose not to it control my life as you seem to do. To each their own.

Come on! Just laugh at it!

Mike ... I guess what upsets me the most is being FORCED to help my fellow human beings, please respect me enough to ASK for me help. In my feeble mind, I would bet you would be given a lot more help than you need or deserve!

EVERYONE missed the point:

The three are bastards because their supposed father (the federal gov't) orphaned them to private control and to run amok.

Mortgages that are supposed to be safe and then have a loophole through which the company is allowed to raise the interest can really screw someone over, and last time I checked most people aren't fluent in legalese.

As for student loans, yet another area where companies can really screw over a person. I'm currently at school and have done everything in my power to avoid (and thankfully have) taking out any loans not from the gov't directly. Student loans when there's 100,000 dollars worth of debt aren't easy to pay back, especially if that was just for a bachelors degree. A bachelors degree, let me tell you, won't get you as far as it once could.

What ever happened to the responsibility of a company to it's customers? To it's employees? To the society that helps it make a profit?

Anonymous said...

Oh! But I did find this hilarious. Mike, not to mention that our kids might be dying off from our ignoring global warming way before we ever get out of that debt... ugh.

I've heard way too much about Freddie and Fanny lately, and not enough about their bitch sister Sallie...

I borrowed money for college from my local bank and then without my permission it was sold to this horrible, soul-less corporation who constantly (and randomly it seemed) required form after form from me. The day I paid that loan off was the happiest day of my life.

Here's some research that will shed some light on the subject:
Just google Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) You'll start asking yourself, who is NOT to blame. This goes well beyond any one administration or one party.

What galls me is that we're looking to the same bunch of mismanagers, Congress, to manage us out of this mess. When are we going to wake up and tell government to stop fixing us?
