I wouldn't consider that to be true for any teachers/coaches/mentors that are worth having.

Well, to an extent anyway. My clarinet teachers and professors certainly weren't quick to lavish us with praise.

I will try to dig out the study... children should learn at first to enjoy the activity. Only if they show promise, and only later (say 12 or 13) should they be turned over to the Taskmaster. Then, the sterner the better.

I don't know if it is different for boys and girls, but I did learn that my stern taskmaster part did not work in 7th-8th grade girls' basketball, but did work for late high-school theater.
