The union didn't result in the opposite of itself (which would have been -C); it resulted in the opposite of B. So she's in the clear :P

and vice versa, presumably. I read the diagram as saying "an apology may alleviate only part of the effect of the original sneer" - depending on how it was phrased. Possibly some of the impact of the sneer is never erased, however sincere and broad the apology. It's like defamation - some of the harm is never undone, even if the person defamed sues and wins, even if the defamer retracts and apologizes. This doesn't mean that retractions or apologies are useless, just not perfect.
