When I looked at this, an image of a man popped into my head... but this could be a woman as well, but then that makes the conclusion inaccurate.. unless, the female Prius drivers happen to be wearing sandals and a pony tail on election day then they wont vote McCain? Well if that is the case then we need to organize a "pony tail/sandal" day on Nov 4th, 2008...

And I fully expect the next one to be a stereotypical diagram of your average non-Obama voter.

But I don't have a ponytail.

Wrong here! Back when I was working for Greenpeace about four years ago, I read all the environmental policy news and was totally cheering for what McCain and Lieberman were accomplishing together. Ever since then I've been a huge McCain fan and am thrilled to be able to vote for him.

Not thinking you need ponytail or sandals in the diagram for this to be accurate. Anyone in the Prius circle, probably not voting McCain.

If female (more likely to have a ponytail), living in warm climate (more likely to wear sandals), and knowing about McCain's position on electric cars, I can actually see this happening. Some people could have a Prius to save money, and not for ethical reasons (then more likely to vote for McKinney/Clemente).

Jack, Prius' aren't to save money. According to autos.yahoo.com, the 5-year cost of owning a Prius (including depreciation, fuel, financing, insurance, repairs, etc.) is $35,791 in my area.

A Toyota Yaris, meanwhile, is $28,942.

The Prius is expensive to buy (starting at $21,500) and depreciates so quickly that its fuel savings don't make up for it.

The only people who buy it are well-off liberals who want to full better about themselves.

...or people who want to use less gas.

Obama: No drilling now, we won't see the benefits for at least 10 years.

So, does he think that 10 years from now, we won't have more oil problems? China won't need it anymore? Opec will decidce, just for the heck of it, to triple its production?

Obama: Get oil changes and inflate your tires.

Yeah, because that is going to lessen the demand on oil in countries like china, the fastest growing oil consumer. Not saying you shouldn't do it, proper maintainance of anything saves you money, but it isn't a solution.

The only place the dems want to drill is your wallet.

Which are wonderful alternatives if you're Amish and your entire world fits within a few square miles.

For the practical world, cars are needed.

Good stuff, Jessica, but not great. More interesting would have been labels on the other sections of the diagram (e.g. Prius & Ponytail, not Sandals). Give us one where those sections might lead to different labels, then you have a commentary.

I am so sick of that. Obama has an in-depth, multi-layered long- and short-term plan for reduced oil usage. "Inflate your tires" is one statement, made once, and vastly over-quoted for the single (Republican-inspired) purpose of making lazy people not bother looking deeper into his policies.

Can be, yes, but it falls short.

In a city, it's great. I wouldn't think of driving into Manhattan. It'd be pointless. Elsewhere? It just doesn't get you where you need to go and takes much longer to get where it does go.

I suppose this stereotype is mostly accurate, but I know too many exceptions to two of the three conditions to accept the three-way Venn diagram as truth. My Father lacks the pony tail but meets the other criteria and will likely vote McCain. My cousin lacks a Prius but sports ponytail and sandals and he will also likely vote McCain.

As to the energy & environmental costs of the Prius, you are correct in saying that the Prius costs more and of itself is the less environmentally (and financially) sound choice; however, it is 1st generation technology and price and environmental costs will decrease as the technology matures. Once a plug-in is available the cost of operation will drop proportionally to the delta between gas and electricity costs. That will help. The biggest hit is with the battery pack, and battery technology continues to advance.
