I'm a gen X'er and I really enjoyed the book microserfs

anyhow I think the correlation here is that far more

er far more people want the stable mega corporate job rather than stick their necks out with a new company.

(the book microserfs was about microsoft employees who left to make their own software company)

8-year-old me once said to my mom, while reading the dictionary:

"I want to be a philanthropist when I grow up."

IMHO:

Y = Rich
X = Grown Up

Microserfs used to be where Google applicants are now, and the latter is moving toward the former every day...

Oh, you called them serfs, that'll show them, ha ha.

At least when applying to Microsoft I'm given independence and the ability to work on interesting projects from day 1 rather than getting stuck in Adsense for years before being allowed to do anything.

gen x wanted to get rich by starting our own companies and going public.
Then it crashed, dreams died and everyone left.
gen y want to get rich working on someone else's ideas and getting paid in their shares.

One of the best yet.

Pretty darn good book for the programmer (Microserf).

Lubby-Dubby conclusion though.

@Brian Beck:

You missed the book _Microserfs_, by Douglas Coupland, I think. Great book, IMO -- well worth reading.

I saw the co-founder of Google on C-Span and he recommended that young entrepreneurs work at a very big company like MSoft before trying his/her own wings. Want to be a success? Start as a serf and see what works in the real world.

I'm not sure which "Google" Brian Beck was working for -- the ability to work on any project I want is the main thing I like about it!

Sorry to hear about your experience, Brian.
