I think I read once that there are more country music stations in New York City than any other kind. But I might've made that up.

Looks like you're right, lord xeon.

Wikipedia confirms, but includes this, and I probably heard some of this at some point which morphed into what I thought:

"While none ever dominated the ratings, most did reasonably well for long stretches; indeed due to the New York area's large population, WYNY had the largest audience of any country station in America. WHN is considered the most listened to Country radio station of all time."

I once worked as the only employee at a country music station, in a city where there was only two radio stations you could even hear (Warroad, in northern Minnesota). I believe I was 17 at the time.

They make money by being cheap. Damned cheap. Satellite feeds, automated commercials, and local religious broadcasting-by-mail on Sundays.

Devious, devious... Like in the old joke "I love to listen to country music backwards... you get your car back, your house back, your wife back...". What would *you* do if you are desperate and hearing from your favorite country singer how hopeless your situation has become on this earth? ("Google" Stack and Gundlach, (Social Forces, 71, 211) for another hint).

This may be true in the North but here in Texas it is not, there are a lot of country station in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin (4th, 7th, 9th, and 16th largest cities in the US) but in many parts of the state you are lucky to get even one station.
