Fear the dented Datsun.

Huh...really? I would have done an inverse relationship. When I got my car, those first few months I was parking *far* away, since I didn't want a car on either side of me.

But, you get that first ding and then your free to park close and get more...

I think he meant the distance other people park away from it...

To me, it seemed like people couldn't park any closer when my car was new. SUVs in "compact" spots, squeezing me between like a dinghy sneaking between cruiseliners. And you know what?! They dinged me. Bastards. Now that the car is old, it seems to have some sort of protective bubble around it... no new dings in about a year. Huh. Go figure. I've had the exact opposite experience of your Datsun.

It's not just how far they park away from the Datsun, they also give it tons of space on the highway. Old car drivers pretty much do whatever they want because they don't care about their car and no one wants to be near a driver with such a flippant driving/parking policy.
